Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Brighton School of Music located?
We are based in Brighton, East Sussex. We serve students across Brighton, Hove, Portslade, Kemptown, Hanover, Seven Dials, Preston Park, and the wider East and West Sussex areas.
Is Brighton School of Music suitable for adults?
Absolutely. Many of our students are adults who are either picking up an instrument for the first time or returning to music after a long break. It is never too late to learn. Our teachers are experienced in working with adult learners and understand the different challenges and motivations adults bring to music lessons.
What makes Brighton School of Music different from other music schools in Brighton?
Every student at Brighton School of Music receives a learning plan tailored to their goals, interests, and learning style. Whether you want to pass a grade exam, play in a band, write your own music, or simply enjoy music as a hobby, our music tutors adapt completely to you. We also offer flexible scheduling including evenings and weekends.
Do I need to commit to lessons in advance?
Not at all. We don't ask you to sign up to a block of lessons or make any commitment upfront. Your first lesson is completely free — it's a chance to meet your teacher, have a go, and see if it feels right for you. After that, there's no pressure. If you want to carry on, great. We'll get you booked in. If it's not for you, no hard feelings and no charge.
What is the minimum age to start music lessons at Brighton School of Music?
We accept students from around age 4-5 upwards, depending on the instrument. Piano and ukulele are popular starting points for young children. Our teachers are experienced in working with young learners and use age-appropriate, engaging teaching methods to keep children motivated and enjoying music.
What is the best age to start learning an instrument?
There is no single right answer, but many parents choose to start children between the ages of 5 and 8. However, starting later — as a teenager or adult — is completely normal and absolutely no barrier to reaching a high level. The most important factor is enthusiasm and a willingness to practise.
What is the best instrument for a child to start with?
Piano and ukulele are among the most popular first instruments because they give students a strong grounding in music theory, ear training, and technique that transfers easily to other instruments. Our teachers are happy to advise on the best instrument based on your child's personality and interests.
Do parents need to stay during lessons?
For younger children it is often helpful for a parent or carer to observe lessons, particularly in the early stages, so they can support practice at home. For older children and teenagers this is usually not necessary. We are happy to discuss what works best for your family.
Do you help children prepare for school music assessments?
Yes. Our teachers can help students prepare for school music lessons, KS3 and GCSE music, A-Level music, and any in-school assessments or performances.
Do you prepare students for ABRSM exams?
Yes. Brighton School of Music prepares students for ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) grade exams from Grade 1 through to Grade 8 and beyond. ABRSM exams are widely recognised by schools and universities and are an excellent way to benchmark progress.
Do I have to take grade exams?
No. Exams are entirely optional at Brighton School of Music. Many students prefer to learn for enjoyment without the pressure of formal assessments. Others find that having an exam to work towards gives them focus and motivation. We are happy to follow your lead.
How much should I practise between lessons?
The more you practise, the faster you will improve — but short, focused practice sessions are far more effective than long, unfocused ones. For beginners, 10 to 20 minutes of focused daily practice is an excellent start. As students progress, 30 to 45 minutes per day is ideal. Your teacher will give specific practice guidance after each lesson.
Do I need to own my instrument before starting lessons?
For most instruments it is helpful to have access to your own instrument at home so you can practise between lessons. However, you do not necessarily need to buy an instrument before your first lesson. We are happy to advise on purchasing or hiring a suitable instrument at the right price point before you commit.
What if I have not played for years and am picking music up again?
Many of our students are returning to music after a gap of years or even decades. Progress for returning players can be surprisingly fast as muscle memory returns. There is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about — our teachers are welcoming, patient, and will meet you exactly where you are.
Can you help me prepare for a performance or gig?
Yes. Performance preparation is an important part of music education. Our teachers can help you select repertoire, manage performance anxiety, develop stage presence, and build the consistency needed to perform confidently in front of an audience — whether that is a school concert, a local venue, or a professional engagement.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
